Mama I'm coming home

Hi again...

My inactivity on this page lately started off due to lack of things to write about. And as time progressed, even as things did happen, I was not inclined to document them. My only excuse is procastination – but no more explanations - here’s finally some new content for this blog.

Not much has happened since I last wrote. I had just quit my job at the UPS store, and was hoping to land another one to help pay the bills before I went home to Finland. Well, unfortunately I’ve not been able to find a suitable temporary job, and have mostly spent my days wasting time, wasting money, wasting away. It’s a beautiful, albeit somewhat too warm, summer, so I guess I could call this summer vacation. The only problem with having summer vacation is the lack of income. And there is a major reason why I would need income now, since I can’t work this fall. I got accepted into the program I applied for a BCIT!

I’m excited to go back to school, as BCIT has a very good reputation, and I believe I’ll learn a great deal of useful things for me to actually be able to get a job I want in this city. The program is one year long, and will cost me close to 13,000 dollars – so the only way I can afford to go through with it is if I get a student loan. I hate to have to go there – I’ve never taken a loan in my life – but with the circumstances being what they are, I do believe this is the best path.

I will briefly tell you about some of the things I’ve done lately – I went to the Capilano suspension bridge with two people from Finland I met up with for a day (30 dollars), then to Playland with Chris (30 dollar more), and then we went kayaking yesterday (christmas present). It’s nice to take advantage of some of the things one can do in this city, it just sucks that everything is overpriced and unorganized. Playland is the same price as the amusement park in Helsinki, yet the Finnish version has way more rides and entertains for a much longer time. The rollercoaster, however, was really fun here in Vancouver. We got some bruises, but it was worth it.

On the job front, I did manage to get a job working part-time as host at the B.C. Place Stadium, at football games and trade shows. It pays a measly 11 dollars an hour. I am waiting to hear from G.M. Place about a hosting position with them – which I would love to get, seeing that it would be the same kind of job as the Hartwall Areena, minus the security part. Lots of hockey and awesome concerts! In Vancouver the hosts are different people than the security guards, which in one way makes sense, but it also annoys me that I have to choose one over the other.

Another thing that annoys me: this city. I like it for how naturally beautiful it is, but I dislike the people. Not everybody, of course – only the people who think they are the centre of the universe – and there are a lot of them around. Especially in the West End, since we are surrounded by beaches, and it is on the beaches these people gather. I am tired of people constantly being in my way and not moving, of loud idiots on the bus – and – speaking of buses – how they are never, ever, ever on time, if they do show up at all. I’ve only lived here for three and a half months, but I’ve been left standing, waiting for a no-show-bus too many times to count. And if they do show up, they are mostly completely packed with people who refuse to move to the back of the bus. Aaah. So annoying. I also just noticed that I should have applied for health insurance coverage as soon as I got to this country. Damn. Now I have to wait two more months before I’m covered. It just doesn’t make sense.

Tonight Chris and I will go see the new Batman movie, if we can get tickets. Tomorrow I have nothing to do. Then Tuesday follows, and so Wednesday, which is the day I am coming home to Finland. I am starting to remember Finland as this perfect place where everything is clean and the buses are always on time. Prove me wrong, Finland.

I am going to upload some pictures to facebook soon, hopefully tomorrow, so take a look there if you're interested. Here are some teasers til then.
